Live to Eat Well, Exercise, Be Well in Mind and Body

About Amber Johnson

Welcome to Food and Fitness Nook, my small corner of the health, fitness, and blogging world. My name is Amber Johnson and I am a certified personal trainer, a certified intuitive eating counselor, a group exercise coach, a personal chef, and a professional writer and editor. Native to the wild and frigid state of Wyoming, I currently live north of the border in beautiful Western Montana.  I love to dance, cook, eat, laugh, travel, sing, read, write, and dance some more.

I am not a high school, college, or career athlete who majored in kinesiology or exercise science and has never known a day overweight or obese.  After spending my entire adolescence and most of my twenties significantly overweight or obese, I managed to successfully shed the excess pounds off my 5’1” frame and maintain most of that weight loss by changing my diet and eating habits, learning to cook delicious and nutritious food, building friendships with active people, and by engaging in consistent exercise and physical activity.

After fifteen years, I also rediscovered my inner athlete – the girl I lost to heaviness, both in body and in spirit, at the age of thirteen. Shortly before my thirtieth birthday, in June 2012, I finished in the top twenty percent in my first sprint triathlon. Later that year, in November 2012, I ran into the top three percent of female finishers in my first half-marathon. And my athletic pursuits and joys have only just begun, as I’m making up for a decade and a half of lost time!

My own story makes me an especially understanding and supportive coach, because I have walked more than a mile in many of my clients’ shoes.  I have sustained and rehabilitated from a life-altering back injury and surgery, after which I became a 100% stronger, fitter, healthier version of myself. I have beat obesity and kept the weight off. I went from being a couch potato to an active and powerful woman. I used to suffer from disordered eating (compulsive overeating, binge eating, and preoccupation with food) and now walk in victory. For these reasons, working as a trainer, eating coach, and personal chef is not just a job that I do; it’s a passion and calling.

I am still learning to love myself for who I was created to be and to work at and celebrate becoming the best version of myself possible – from the inside out. Though a personal trainer and a powerful athlete, I am neither skinny or a hardbody. I hail from a short Norwegian family on one side and a stocky, muscular Swedish family on the other. It’s like I was genetically engineered to herd reindeer in harsh Nordic conditions. This means I’m short, muscular, and I naturally carry some extra bum and bosom as padding to keep me warm and safe during the winter season. Alas, my girlhood dream of becoming a tall, slender, underfed, brittle-boned, airbrushed version of modern media’s idea of a perfect, beautiful woman will never be realized.  On Dasher, on Dancer, on Prancer, on Vixen…….

Finally – Confession Time. While I’ve come a long way from where I used to be, I haven’t got it all figured out yet. I am no Galadriel. I’m not a picture of perfection in a castle on top of a lofty hill, beckoning the weary soldier forward. No, I consider myself a captain – leading my platoon into one skirmish after another. I’m on the frontlines, sometimes fighting what seems an uphill battle. And I don’t win every battle, but I haven’t given up the fight. I’ve sustained some setbacks and injuries along the way, but I’m not ready to wave the white flag of surrender! If it takes me a lifetime, I will keep pushing forward.

And I welcome you to join me on the journey! My hope and prayer is that this website and blog, along with my services as a trainer and counselor, will serve as a source of encouragement and inspiration to you as you fight the good fight to better your health, increase your confidence, and rediscover your joy.
